MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow unloaded on tech billionaire Elon Musk on Friday in a deep dive into the finances, potential conflicts of interest and relationship the world’s richest person has developed with President Donald Trump.
Maddow in her top-rated show’s opening monologue first highlighted the growing protests outside the office’s of Musk-owned companies including SpaceX and Tesla, the latter of which she noted “the vast bulk of his wealth is based on.”
But she went on to tell viewers that it remains to be seen what his public image will morph into once the full scope of his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, settles in with Americans.
Maddow also pondered how long Trump and Musk will remain buddies.
“Because I think there's a lot of weird variables at play here,” Maddow said Friday.

“I mean, obviously this is a personal crusade of his to destroy as much of the constitutional republic as he can without any regard at all for him having any legitimate government authority or following any laws,” she said. “The personal dynamic, in addition, between this campaign donor and the president himself is very unusual, given that the president seems to have personally empowered this guy without actually giving him a government job.”
Maddow added: “The dynamic between them is weird.”
“The president is effectively sidelined while Elon Musk takes center stage,” Maddow pointed out. “The president, in contrast, appears to be weak and sort of beside the point while his campaign donor regularly upstages him and talks over him both in interviews and in the Oval Office.”
That would be hard to accept “for even the least egotistical president,” the MSNBC host noted. “It remains to be seen how it'll play out with this one,” she concluded.
