French high commissioner says death was not the result of police gunfire as unrest flares over plan to increase the number of French nationals eligible to vote in Pacific territory
One person has been shot dead and two others injured in New Caledonia, the French high commissioner has said, during protests against constitutional changes that have led to more than 130 arrests.
High commissioner Louis Le Franc said on Wednesday the death was the result of self-defence and was not the result of police gunfire but did not give further details, according to French media.
