'Feeling the pressure': Critics pounce on Trump telling insiders Musk is on his way out

Hot on the heels of billionaire and Donald Trump confidante Elon Musk suffering a humiliating defeat in Wisconsin after sinking a reported $26 million into getting a conservative elected to the state Supreme Court which turned into a massive flop, Politico is reporting Donald Trump is assuring insiders Musk will be out of their hair soon.

According to the bombshell report from Politico's Rachel Bade, "The president remains pleased with Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency initiative but both men have decided in recent days that it will soon be time for Musk to return to his businesses and take on a supporting role, according to three Trump insiders who were granted anonymity to describe the evolving relationship."

News of the departure of Musk from being the president's near-constant wingman was greeted with no small measure of glee among critics with many believing Musk and his DOGE staffers have become an anchor around Trump's neck.

While popular historian Heather Cox Richardson expressed skepticism on Blue Sky by writing, "I’ll believe it when I see it. Musk knows too much," Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX) wrote hopefully, "They’re feeling the pressure. Keep up the fight to Fire Elon Musk."

American Compass official Chris Griswald cited Trump's much-hyped tariff announcement for later Wednesday, joking, "When they do Liberation Day, they really do Liberation Day..." on Musk's X.

"Tesla stock rising on Wall Street belief that Musk is about to get booted by Trump. I totally called this!" author and podcaster Amy Siskind crowed.

Reporter Lewis Goodall observed, "Politico reporting that Trump has told his inner circle, including members of his Cabinet, that Elon Musk will be stepping back from his current role in the administration. If so Musk won’t have made the 100 day mark."

"OMG So the Dow Jones is spiking right now after Politico published this piece about Trump telling his team that Elon Musk will depart the administration soon," reported The Independent's Justin Baragona.

Rolling Stone journalist Asawin Suebsaeng added, "If/when this occurs, does anyone think he stops playing a massive role of influence on government, DOGE, GOP, Trumpland? It’s nowhere in his official duties now to try to save (lol) the gop in a Wisconsin race, and he made himself chief figurehead of that."
