One of President Donald Trump's most controversial federal prosecutors is now waging a campaign of intimidation against Wikipedia.
According to The Free Press, Ed Martin, the acting U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., sent a letter to the Wikimedia Foundation, the parent organization for the internet encyclopedia, accusing them of "engaging in a series of activities that could violate its obligations" as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and of “allowing foreign actors to manipulate information and spread propaganda to the American public.”
Martin went on to complain that the Wikimedia board is "composed primarily of foreign nationals” who are “subverting the interests of American taxpayers.”

Wikipedia has been targeted by the right on several occasions; earlier this year, the Heritage Foundation sought to use malicious tracking links against volunteer editors they alleged are "abusing their positions."
This is not the first time Martin, a longtime conservative activist who has no formal experience as a prosecutor, has sent letters threatening bizarre criminal investigations against various groups that have come under the MAGA world's wrath.
Earlier this month, he sent a letter threatening to investigate the American College of Chest Physicians for "partisan" decisions in publishing medical research, and the month before, a letter threatening Georgetown University over its diversity programs. He also sent a letter threatening criminal incitement prosecution of a member of Congress for making a "bar fight" analogy about tech billionaire Elon Musk.
While doing all this, Martin has conversely come under fire for his decisions not to prosecute more serious cases involving Trump-favored individuals. He turned away a D.C. police investigation of domestic assault allegations against pro-Trump Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL), and personally pushed to drop charges against Jan. 6 rioters — a potential conflict of interest as he legally represented some of the people whose charges he sought dismissal for.
Trump, unconcerned with any of these controversies, has nominated Martin to serve as U.S. attorney on a permanent basis.
