Fox News host Bret Baier appeared on The New Yorker's weekly podcast with editor David Remnick, where Baier was asked to defend some of his colleagues' behavior.
Remnick asked Baier bluntly, "Do you ever wanna throw a shoe at some of your colleagues or their flickering images on the screen?” He was referring to other hosts like Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, and Mark Levin, all of whom have been known to stir controversy on their shows.
At first, Baier demurred and tried to be politically correct in his response. He told Remnick that the other hosts "have a different job than I have."
But Remnick wasn't having it.
“Do you not feel implicated in some way by their excesses at times?” the magazine's editor asked pointedly.
Baier said the people who have the biggest issues with Fox are the ones who likely haven't watched much of the network's programming. Instead, Baier said people should watch his show and decide for themselves whether it is fair and balanced.
In 2023, Fox News settled a defamation lawsuit with Dominion Voting Systems over claims that Fox misled its viewers about the security of the 2020 presidential election. Fox was forced to pay $787 million to Dominion and let go of one of the network's top stars, Tucker Carlson.
Remnick then asked if Baier sees any similarities between Hannity and Ingraham on Fox and someone like Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.
Baier scuttled around the question and instead told Remnick that he focuses on his "product with horse blinders" rather than reflecting on shows from the Fox network or others.
