'Sold your constituents out': Jasmine Crockett unloads on GOP colleagues

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) called out her GOP colleagues on Tuesday after they voted to pass President Donald Trump's budget bill.

"I don't really understand what it is that y'all plan to go back and tell your constituents," Crockett said during a hearing of the House Rules Committee. "I'm glad that some of y'all decided to show up, but the reality is that you have sold your constituents out for 83 people in this country."

Trump's budget passed the Senate on Tuesday with a 50-50 vote. Vice President JD Vance broke the tie. It will head next to the House of Representatives to repass the changes the senators made.

The bill contains several provisions that experts warn will harm low-income households. For instance, it would require Medicaid members to work at least 80 hours per month to receive benefits, place severe limitations on federal food assistance money, and dramatically scale back other public benefits.

A recent analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that nearly 12 million people would lose their health insurance if the bill passes as written.

Several polls show that most Americans do not support the bill. A Quinnipiac Poll from late June found that 55% of Americans opposed the bill, which represents an increase of 6% when compared to another poll conducted by PEW earlier in the month.

"How is it that you can explain that we still are running up the credit card and we have nothing to show for it except for the fact that we won't have food on the tables and we won’t have health care?" Crockett said.
