CNN's Brianna Keilar was floored by some of the comments President Donald Trump made on Wednesday during a press conference before he traveled to Iowa for an event.
Trump told reporters that he made "no progress" with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a nearly hour-long phone call between the two leaders. That admission seems to contradict Trump's previous statements about his interactions with Putin.
"I didn't make any progress with him today at all," Trump said during the news conference.
Keilar described Trump's statement as a "stunning admission" because Trump asked Putin to "end the war in Ukraine as soon as possible" while the two were on the phone.
An aide for Putin told reporters after the call that Russia has no plans of "backing down" in the war in Ukraine, Al Jazeera reported. Putin added that the "root causes" of the conflict still need to be resolved, which experts say means Russia is still seeking to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO.
However, the aide also said Putin expressed a "readiness" to “seek a political and negotiated solution to the conflict," the outlet reported.
Putin also said on the call that he may be interested in taking more land than just Ukraine, Al Jazeera reported.
Bloomberg reported that Russia launched a drone attack on several Ukrainian cities following the call between Trump and Putin.
Trump and Putin have talked six times since Trump took office in January.
