President Donald Trump was leaving Joint Base Andrews on Thursday for a rally in Iowa when reporters asked him about his call with Russian President Vladimir Putin that morning.
Trump announced on Truth Social that he would have a call with Putin at 10 a.m. EDT. Trump announced earlier this week that the U.S. would no longer send some weapons it pledged to Ukraine after a "review" of military aid.
"We had a call. It was a pretty long call," Trump told reporters. "We talked about a lot of things, including Iran. And we also talked about, uh, as you know, the war with Ukraine. And, uh, I'm not happy about that. I'm not happy about that."
A Kremlin aide told reporters that Putin conveyed to Trump that Russia "will not step back from its original goals," Reuters reported.
Trump has been trying to garner a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, but has failed to persuade Putin to give up on some of his demands.
Reporters inquired whether Trump had made progress with Putin on a peace agreement or ceasefire.
"No. I didn't make any progress with him at all," Trump confessed.
