Leaders from Bush to Barrasso paid tribute to the former vice-president, whose career drew praise and controversy
US political leaders offered their condolences in reaction to the news that Dick Cheney had died, with George W Bush describing his former vice-president as “a calm and steady presence in the White House amid great national challenges”.
Bush wrote in a statement that he would remember Cheney “for the decent honorable man that he was” and that history would remember him “as among the finest public servants of his generation – a patriot who brought integrity, high intelligence and seriousness of purpose to every position he held”.
