Why is Mr. Mime not waking up?

I knew the "secret" mechanic that playing the Pokeflute worked as an "Awakening" for every pokemon on the field but... It wasn't working for me? Then it hit me. Mr. Mime's ability is Soundproof, which makes him virtually DEAF. My guy wasn't hearing me playing the pokeflute!
