A Democratic Senate candidate in Arizona was hit and killed Friday by a driver suspected to be impaired, according to news reports.
Senate candidate John McLean, who ran as the Democratic challenger to represent the Tucson-area District 17 seat, was driving a Toyota Rav4 around 6 a.m. Friday when he was struck by a Ford Explorer, The Arizona Daily Star reported.
The driver of the Explorer, later identified as 27-year-old Michael Martin Creel, ran a stop sign and hit the passenger side of McLean’s vehicle, Tucson police said in a news release Friday.

McLean died at the scene and his family has since been notified of his passing, police said. The driver of the Explorer, who was not injured in the crash, was charged with suspicion of manslaughter and aggravated DUI, according to police.
The Arizona Daily Star reported that McLean faced Republican Venden “Vince” Leach in the Nov. 5 election. According to recent media reports, Leach was leading in the race.
The investigation remains ongoing.
