'Betrayed': Ethics committee Democrat lashes out at GOP chair's remarks on Gaetz report

Rep. Susan Wild (D-PA) gave a statement after the House Ethics Committee meeting about the group's decision not to release the report about former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) on party lines.

She said she left the room with plans to abide by their agreement not to discuss what transpired.

"But it has come to my attention that the chairman has since betrayed the process by disclosing our deliberations within moments after walking out of the committee, and he has implied that there was an agreement of the committee not to disclose the report," said Wild.

She called the decision an "untrue" characterization, saying that the committee did not come to such a consensus.

"I will say that a vote was taken. As many of you know, this committee is evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans, five Dems, five Republicans. Which means that in order to affirmatively move something forward somebody has to cross party lines and vote with the other side, which happens a lot, by the way. And we often vote unanimously," she continued.

Wild said she doesn't want Americans to think that Gaetz's characterization of what happened in the Ethics Committee was some kind of "unanimous consensus" not to release the report.

They plan to meet again on Dec. 5 to further consider the matter.
