Large US non-profit hospital system will spend $1bn in Chicago’s South Side

Advocate Health plans to replace 115-year-old hospital in area with one of the largest life expectancy gaps in the US

The third largest non-profit hospital system in the nation, Advocate Health, said it plans to spend $1bn in Chicago’s South Side neighborhood, and replace an aging hospital with a smaller facility and more primary care appointments.

Chicago has one of the largest life expectancy gaps in the nation. Racial segregation is thought to be at the heart of a roughly 30-year life expectancy gap between the North and South Side neighborhoods.
