‘Dumbest time to be alive’: Critics pounce on Trump’s new 'shameless grift'

Days before he is set to be officially inaugurated as the country’s 47th president, Donald Trump announced his latest money-making scheme had arrived.

A new meme coin.

"My NEW Official Trump Meme is HERE!” the president-elect wrote Friday in a social media plug to his followers. “It’s time to celebrate everything we stand for: WINNING! Join my very special Trump Community. GET YOUR $TRUMP NOW. Have fun!"

But not all were immediately on board with the presidential merchandise.

“You’re nothing but a shameless grifter,” Republicans against Trump wrote in a reply post. “Truly pathetic.”

"Dumbest time to be alive," Andrew Hayward, managing editor for Decrypt wrote on X.

Political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen pointed out to his followers on X: “Only posts on Twitter for special occasions, like grifting his supporters. Pay up, everyone!”

“Instead of lowering prices or ending war in Ukraine, Trump is selling ‘meme coins’ right before the inauguration,” USC law professor Ben Meiselas posted on Bluesky. “He doesn’t give a crap about our country. The world is laughing at us.”

Bluesky user Joey Politano, who writes about economics, posted: “I hate the bitcoin presidency!!! I hate le epic Shiba Inu meme budget commission!!! I hate the cypto cabinet!!!!”

“Even the crypto bros recognize Trump’s set-up as an obvious scam,” Gizmodo tech reporter Matt Novak pointed out on his Bluesky account.
